Harper: Dalia Lama is "not a call girl". K, thanks, Steve.

Seems how it is Christmas eve I wanted to give all of you left-leaning readers out there a little gift. Stephen Harper usually comes across as a a very smart man and yet many equate his politics to being up the same alley as George Bush, a man who – how shall we say this politely? – often does not come across as a very smart man. How’s that for ironic?

Well, just this past week, in one of his many year-end television interviews (specifically the one with OMNI Television), Harper misspoke in a manner usually reserved for his colleague to the south. Here it is in all its glory; to the best of my recollection Stephen Harper’s first Bushism:

“I met the Dalai Lama in my office but I meet everyone in my office. I don’t know why I would sneak off to a hotel room just to meet the Dalai Lama. You know, he’s not a call girl. As I say, he’s a respected international spiritual leader.”

You don’t say, Steve? I was unaware of the fact that the Dalia Lama is not a prostitute. I guess you learn something new every day. BTW, Stephen, do you normally reserve sneaking off to hotel rooms to only your meetings with call girls?

Blogging about blogging (such introspection!)

In case you haven’t heard yet: the Canadian Blog Awards finally have a new home and will be presented this year after all.

I’m not suggesting you should vote for me – far from it. I’m not even sure what category this blog would be nominatable in. Best New Blog? Best Non-Partisan Blog? Maybe, Best Local Blog? Best made up word for the term “nominatable”? Either way, my goal is to provide even more/better quality on this blog and to be more like past recipients in the Best Religious Blog category.

I did want to draw your attention to a friend’s blog that I nominated: Mike’s Bloggity Blog Blob – who today informs us the People’s Choice Awards have been cancelled because of the Writers’ Guild strike. (Who knew we, the people, couldn’t be forced to choose when there were no writers in Hollywood? And what’s left, when we no longer have the power to choose? Chaos. And possibly the Blockbuster Awards. Although I think those were cancelled in 2002. They probably weren’t cancelled because of a writers strike; its more likely they were cancelled because of suckiness. Or pointlessness.) I nominated Mike’s blog in the Best Entertainment Blog and Best Humour Blog categories. If he makes the long list be sure to go vote for him!

Learning the true meaning of "democratically elected"

I’ve written about it before and it looks like I’m going to have to write about it again: Craig Chandler – you MUST learn what an election is. Seriously. This is getting embarrassing.

As I stated before Mr. Chandler has not won any election. Elections Canada or Elections Alberta has not overseen any “election” in which he has won jack-squat. They are the bodies in charge of our democratic elections. The only thing Mr. Chandler has done is have more than 50% of a handful of Alberta Progressive Conservative Calgary-Egmont Riding Association members who showed up at a specific community hall on a specific day in November say they wanted him to be their nominee to run in the next provincial election under the Alberta PC banner. That’s a long way from being “democratically elected” to anything.

So why is Chandler, who announced a couple days ago that he will run in Calgary-Egmont as an independent, touting the fact his campaign signage will contain the phrase: the “democratically elected conservative candidate for Calgary-Egmont”. Nope. Sorry, that’s probably going to be some other person. Probably one who doesn’t slag and sue his own party.

On a related note – my rabbit and I just held an “election” and I’m please report I have been named Assistant Deputy Prime Minister of Everything. (The bunny abstained on the third ballot – that broke the stalemate and sealed my victory.) As my first act I am going to introduce legislation to make snow tires mandatory and to lower the legal blood alcohol level for drivers to .05.

The rabbit is ticked I’m using my powers so recklessly.

I’m alive!

Wow, there certainly has been a lot of activity in the ol’ blog analytics thingies over the past week. In other words, I haven’t posted in 10 days and there has still been about the same number of people reading this blog. That of course means there is a bunch of new people reading my ramblings.

Mainly I think this is thanks to my new inclusion as a member of Blogging Canadians (as a Non-Partisan) and Progressive Bloggers. Hello to members of those two groups! I invite you to subscribe and hear a little more about what’s going on in Calgary.

Well, enough is enough and it is time for some new ramblings for all the old faithful. (And by “old” I mean you’ve been reading since shortly after I started this blog in early November.)

If you would use that classification to consider yourself an “old” reader then you probably have noticed I don’t blog about myself very often. The antics of others are so much more fun than mine! But I do want to apologise for such a long hiatus since the last post. I have been working pretty much 12 hours a day straight for the past week and haven’t had a chance to blog let alone read what news the world has to offer.

Unless the Jamie Lynn Spears pregnancy can be considered news. That topic did come up at dinner last night and I was suitably surprised. After all, I’m one of a handful of non-age 9 to 14 girls that has actually watched Zoey 101. Yes, her show is number 1 in the US with 9 to 14 year olds. And yes there is honestly nothing better on during the odd Saturday morning. And now you know how I learn so many useless facts: they spawn from TV boredom.

Anyway, enough about me. And certainly that’s enough about Britney’s younger sister. On to more local high-jinks…

I wanted to offer Calgary filmmaker (and friend) Cam Christiansen congrats for his short film, I Have Seen the Future, being accepted into the Sundance Film Festival.

The film has also screened at the Toronto International Film Festival and Calgary International Film Festival – among others. If you’d like, you can follow his exploits by joining his film’s Facebook group here.

Way to go Cam!
